Custom Lifting Chain

Custom Lifting Chain

Lifting chains are often used in conjunction with other types of lifting equipment, such as cranes, hoists, or winches. They are attached to the object that needs to be lifted using a hook or other type of fastener, and they are used to lift and move the object by pulling on the chain. The speed at which the object is lifted or moved can be controlled by adjusting the hand crank or lever on the lifting equipment, and the position of the object can be adjusted by moving the lifting chain to a different location.

Which chain grade should be used for which type of application?

Alloy Chain Grade 80 or Grade 100 should be used for overhead lifting. ASTM states that alloy chain shall be able to elongate a minimum of 20% before fracture (7.3.5). To ensure that alloy chain consistently meets this requirement, ASTM requires the use of certain alloying elements in the manufacturing of the steel for alloy steel chain. These alloys can vary from company to company, but some key requirements are specified by ASTM. The alloy properties also improve the wear and tear that the chain will experience.  Note that when chain is in use, no amount of stretch is allowed.

Characteristics of Lifting Chains

Lifting chains are typically made from high-quality alloy steel, which provides excellent strength and durability. They consist of a series of interconnected links that form a continuous chain. Lifting chains are available in different sizes, grades, and configurations to match specific load requirements. They may feature different types of end fittings, such as hooks, shackles, or rings, for convenient connection to lifting devices. Lifting chains are designed to meet industry standards and regulations for load capacity, safety, and performance.

Importance of Proper Lifting Chain Usage

Proper usage of lifting chains is crucial to ensure safe lifting operations and prevent accidents or equipment failure. It is important to select the appropriate lifting chain based on load requirements, working load limits, and industry standards. Regular inspection and maintenance of lifting chains are necessary to identify any signs of wear, damage, or deformation that may affect their strength. Proper training and adherence to safety guidelines are essential for operators and riggers working with lifting chains to minimize risks and ensure optimal performance.

Types of Lifting Chains

There are different types of lifting chains available, designed to suit specific load requirements and lifting applications. Grade 80 chains are commonly used for general lifting purposes, offering a good balance between strength and affordability. Grade 100 chains provide higher strength and load-bearing capacity, making them suitable for heavy-duty lifting tasks. Additionally, stainless steel chains are available for applications that require corrosion resistance. The choice of lifting chain depends on factors such as load weight, working conditions, and safety regulations.

Frequently Asked Question

Do you have any question?

Only alloy steel chain, grade 80 or 100 is to be used for overhead lifting. Alloy steel chain will stretch when over loaded; other types of steel may break without warning. Steel chains slings used for lifting are manufactured specifically for lifting.

The most common reason for damage to chain and chain links stems from improper use, e.g. not complying with the chain's WLL chart. Using a chain incorrectly can cause damage such as cracks, breaks, stretched links or fittings, excessive wear, nicks, gouges and rigid chain links or fittings

Equipment should generally be inspected every three months, or more frequently if subjected to severe conditions.
