Classification by wire rope use

Depending on where they are used, wire ropes have to fulfill different requirements. The main uses are:

(1)Running ropes (stranded ropes) are bent over sheaves and drums. They are therefore stressed mainly by bending and secondly by tension.

(2)Stationary ropes, stay ropes (spiral ropes, mostly full-locked) have to carry tensile forces and are therefore mainly loaded by static and fluctuating tensile stresses. Ropes used for suspension are often called cables.

(3)Track ropes (full locked ropes) have to act as rails for the rollers of cabins or other loads in aerial ropeways and cable cranes. In contrast to running ropes, track ropes do not take on the curvature of the rollers. Under the roller force, a so-called free bending radius of the rope occurs. This radius increases (and the bending stresses decrease) with the tensile force and decreases with the roller force.

(4)Wire rope slings (stranded ropes) are used to harness various kinds of goods. These slings are stressed by the tensile forces but first of all by bending stresses when bent over the more or less sharp edges of the goods.

Frequently Asked Question

Do you have any question?

Wire ropes are used dynamically for lifting and hoisting in cranes and elevators, and for transmission of mechanical power. Wire rope is also used to transmit force in mechanisms, such as a Bowden cable or the control surfaces of an airplane connected to levers and pedals in the cockpit.

The term cable is often used interchangeably with wire rope. However, in general, wire rope refers to diameters larger than 3/8 inch. Sizes smaller than this are designated as cable or cords. Two or more wires concentrically laid around a center wire is called a strand.

Wire rope, often called cable, is sized by diameter (not circumference, as large sizes of fiber rope are). The diameter is measured across the rope, not from flat to flat. The rope's construction is described by a designation like “6 × 17”. the first number is the number of strands.

he strength of wire rope is broken down into different grades, including: Improved Plow Steel (IPS) Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) is 15% stronger than IPS. Extra Extra Improved Plow Steel (EEIPS) is 10% stronger than EIPS.
